Julia Calvo’s interventions, through minimal alterations in the space, completely transform it. The crack through which the light emerges and introduces a new depth, the small elevations of the ground, the suggestion of a space beyond, overflows the physical spatiality and introduces a psychological and affective dimension that complicates the relationship of the viewer with the environment. In a way, it is as if the space was endowed with qualities and meanings that it lacked, or that were there and that were not evident to our gaze.
And that same sense of altering the known and making it strange – and thus endowing it with a new intensity – is also found in his paintings, which lower and alter tones to provide a particular chromatic experience halfway between the material and the atmospheric.
